Meet Granny’s Gone Wild.
The story starts with my cousin trying to make the perfect apple pie. The goal was simple: calm my grandmother, settle everybody down, and turn the usual family chaos back into something that looked vaguely normal.
A noble effort, possibly doomed from the beginning, but the pie came out beautiful. Golden crust, glossy filling, and good enough to make everybody stop arguing long enough to ask who made it.
Then came the smell.
Crisp Granny Smith apple, unexpected strawberry, ginger, clove, and anise. Tart, sweet, spicy, and just suspicious enough.
By the second slice, people were talking. By the third, somebody was confessing. Then the 1995 Mount Rose runner-up looked at Granny and said, “This tastes familiar.”
Of course it did.
Granny’s Gone Wild is Sunday dinner with history, dessert as damage control, and a pie brought out when everyone needs to calm down but nobody is emotionally prepared to discuss what actually happened.
Granny is not baking for compliments anymore.
She is baking for closure.
Everything is fine. Everything is normal.
It is not.
And honestly, that is what makes it so good.
